My first landing into an airport: Lucca!

In the last months flying has been a bit monotonous: just a lot of circuits and touch&go! I have done something like 15 hours more than those expected and I'm still waiting for my flight exam, that should take place on October 12. But two weeks ago I have enjoy one of the most exciting challenge I have ever done (since now) on a plane: landing for the first time in a real airport instead that in an airfield, taking part into a great aviation event: the first European meeting of ultralight aircraft!

I want to remind you that in Italy is normally forbidden for ultralights not only to land in airports, but also  to fly at less than 5 Km of distance from them or to enter a controlled airspace.
It is however possible, for some special events or airshows, to be authorized both for the approach and the landing.
As you can imagine, as soon as I discovered that for this event ultralight were allowed, I immediately booked plane and instructor to participate!
Our adventure would starts on Saturday morning, so on Friday night I slept just a couple of hours, so great was the excitement! On Saturday morning, at nine o'clock, I was in Valdera airfield, with all the maps I had prepared the night before for navigation (although the airport is just a 15-minute flight from the airfield).
After washing the plane, checking it and after a short briefing, we were ready for departure!

You can see the video of this flight at the bottom of the article!

(Lucca-Tassignano airport is located in the blue circle inside the red area in the map. You can also see the purple triangle of Pontedera, near the center of the map just out the red area, and Capannoli, where my airfield is located, as grey little spot at SE of Pontedera)

After taking off from runway 12, we turned to North-West, directed to Pontedera, compulsory reporting point to enter the space of Lucca. Although the airport is not in a CTR, it is located within a restricted area (the red area in the map above) and so you need to a clearance to enter the airspace.
For the first time so I was able to communicate with a real controller. All went pretty good, since even in our field proper communications are always held in high esteem.
Once on Pontedera, we turned to the north, crossing the Arno river and passing near Sierra mountain.

After about ten minutes the airport was in sight, a strip of asphalt, 900m long, surrounded by a large grassy area. The airport has a single runway with 10-28 orientation and that day the runway in use was the 10 with a non standard right circuit.
After the clearance for entering the downwind leg, it was really difficult to obtain the clearance for the final approach.
Given the large number of aircraft in the area, to find a free moment for communications, especially for a novice like me, it was not easy at all!
Once on short final, however, the thrill of having that fine line of asphalt in front of me was priceless.
The landing was not the best, but still satisfactory: the asphalt has an effect on the aircraft ground handling completely different from the grass! After we stopped and performed a backtrack (i.e. to taxy down the runway in the direction opposite to that of landing) we found a follow me car waiting for us to make our way in the maze of parked aircraft.

After parking, the morning continued between queue to pay airport taxes, various documents, a coffee at the airport bar and a chat with several other pilots, most of which came from the same aeroclub of mine. There were also some wonderful radio controlled models, brought by another member of Pisa Aeroclub.

The departure of returning to Valdera was pretty traumatic, given the large influx of planes we had to wait a lot at the holding point, before cleared for take off.
This time, however, it was my instructor to manage communications!

Here you can find the video of this great experience!

-----------------------------------------------
