From Valdera to Chiusdino: Flying over Siena countryside

In the last weeks I decided it was time to try a cross country flight a bit more difficult than those done since now.
Some days ago so I agreed with my instructor that a good place to fly in was Chiusdino Avio Club.
The airfield is located near Chiusdino, a small village in the countryside of Siena. It is not a particularly long flight, since the entire trip took only 72 minutes. The day was perfect, sunny with a few high clouds, although there was a bit of wind (6-7 knots). The planned route included heading SE towards Volterra, then south to Pomarance and then again south-east, after crossing the hills, to the final destination.
Getting to Volterra was not particularly difficult. This medieval city is located on an isolated hill in the middle of a plain, and was already visible in the distance just after the take off. With an average speed of 150 km/h, and keeping an altitude of 1000ft, we were south of the country after about ten minutes.

(Volterra)

At that point point I veered south, heading to Pomarance. That area was completely new for me, because I never flew there, so I was very nervous for the fear of getting lost. When you are in the air, you can not stop and ask someone for the direction and there are no signs, so just the smallest mistake is enough to find yourself completely off course. However, fortunately after about five minutes of flight we were with the houses of Pomarance under the fuselage.
But the hardest part was just coming. I had to fly for twenty minutes without any reference to the ground, since I was not able to find anything on Google or on my map that could serve as a visual reference. Although I was then concentrated to maintain constant heading, altitude and speed, I could not remain indifferent to the beauty of the Tuscan countryside: emerald green fields alternate with woods and fields, bell and scattered villages perched in the hills that occasionally emerged out of the green of the grassy ground.
After about fifteen minutes of flight, the field was finally in sight. It was really very exciting to be able to find it without any tip by the instructor and without navigation instruments such as GPS, VOR or anything except than compass and clock.

HERE YOU CAN FIND THE VIDEO THIS FLIGHT!

After making a left circuit for runway 12, in order to check that the field was free since there given that no  one answered on the radio, I had to abort the first landing because I was too high, having made a circuit a bit too tight. The second attempt went instead to fruition.
The runway of Chiusdino is peculiar, as there is a drop of about 2 meters in the middle of the runway. Even the soil was not perfectly leveled like I'm used to, so the landing was a bit rough.

After the backtrack, it was the time of the return. We get airborne from runway 12, with 5-6 knots of headwind, turn right and then heading to Volterra, which slightly visible in the distance. Having this time the sun at our back, the view was even more spectacular. Unfortunately we could not fly over Volterra, since it is a forbidden zone for the presence of a prison, but we could still see up close: wonderful!
After passing Volterra, after ten minutes we were already in the right downwind for runway 12 at Valdera.
To get off the plane and to put feet back on the ground is never easy for a pilot, his house, his natural element, is the sky. In this case it was even more difficult, having been able to savor the pleasure to roam free and undisturbed.
Next week I will do my flight exam to get my flight certificate ... After that, well, I can finally give free rein to my desire to roam!

---------------------------------------

A quel punto ho virato sud.
